Barriers
by theo.c
..are synonymous with with constraints, with limitations.
Barriers should only consist of things beyond our control, ie. acts of God. Examples of this would be earthquakes, tornadoes, tsunamis, volcanoes, weather, etc.
That’s right. Everything else besides those things, we can do something about. Therefore, they should not be barriers.
Time is not a barrier. We can overcome the barrier of time through proper planning, followed by efficient and productive execution of the plan.
Ability is not a barrier. We overcome the constraint of ability through prodigious study and willpower.
Human beings are not barriers. We invariably encounter human beings who seem to be barriers in the course of our lives. After much thought, I think that the most another human being can do for you is to show you the way. There are many ways this is done: one may show you the way by telling you what it is, and conversely, may show you the way by telling you what it isn’t. Above all, we must realize that in the end, it is us who choose to do, or to not do. We, and only we, choose to move ourselves forward, or to not move ourselves forward.
The biggest barrier to our progress is usually (ironically) ourselves.
“Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless – like water. Now you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup, you put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle, you put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.”
- Bruce Lee
The defining question is “How much is it worth to you? / How much do you want it?”
Answer this honestly, and your answer should tell you what you are willing to commit /do / sacrifice to achieve this goal.
